Why We Pivoted Back to Training for Adventure

We want to be honest about something, because the honesty is the whole point of this brand.
For a while, Cascadian Paws looked like a gear company. Collars, leashes, bowls, a few odds and ends. And gear is genuinely part of life with dogs — we’re not knocking it. But if we’re being straight with you, the gear was never the reason we started this. It was the thing we reached for first because it felt like the obvious way to build a dog brand.
The idea underneath it — the one we’d had all along — was Training for Adventure. A dog you can actually take places. Calm on the trail, steady in town, ready for the river or the ridge because the two of you have put in the reps together. That was always the north star. The gear was supposed to serve it.
Then we held the products in our hands
Here’s where it got uncomfortable. As we brought products in to sell, we made ourselves apply one test: would we actually put this on our own dogs, on a real trail, and feel good about it? For most of what we’d lined up, the honest answer was no. It didn’t pass the sniff test once it was in our hands. It was fine. Fine isn’t what we want to sell to someone who trusts us.
The clear exception was our locally sourced Cycle Dog pieces — made right here in Portland from recycled bicycle inner tube. Those we would put on our own dogs, and do. They earned their place. Most of the rest didn’t, so we’re not going to pretend otherwise just to fill a catalog.
So we pivoted — back to the real idea
That realization sent us back to where we should have started: the training itself. The education. The thing we’d spent years and more than 19 foster dogs actually learning, checked against trusted, peer-reviewed, and professional sources. That’s what people were missing when they searched at midnight for a straight answer. Not another collar — a reliable, science-aligned way to teach the dog in front of them.
So Cascadian Paws is a training-and-education company that keeps a small, purposeful shelf of gear it truly believes in — not a gear company with some training on the side. The Field Cards, the Field Guides, this blog: that’s the center now. The Cycle Dog gear stays because it supports the mission and passes the test. Everything that didn’t, went.
What this means for you
You’ll see fewer products from us, chosen more carefully — and a lot more genuinely useful training. If we put something on the shelf, it’s because we’d use it ourselves. And if we teach you something, it’s because we tested it, sourced it, and stand behind it.
If you want to see where we’re pointed, start with the free Training Bundle Field Cards — use code cptraining26 at checkout. That’s Training for Adventure, in your pocket, at no cost. It’s the version of Cascadian Paws we should have led with all along.
