Why We're Building What We're Building

In 2016, we brought home our first dog. We had done the reading. We had the enthusiasm. And within about a week, we realized that loving a dog and knowing how to help one were two very different things.

So we did what everyone does. We searched. We asked. We read forums at midnight. And what we found wasn’t a shortage of information — it was an overwhelming pile of it, most of it contradicting the piece right above it. One source said one thing with total confidence. The next said the exact opposite, with just as much confidence. Sorting the accurate, reward-based guidance from the noise felt like finding a needle in a haystack, except the haystack kept growing.

So we did the only thing we could. We learned by doing. Trial, error, adjust, repeat.

Then we started fostering

Over the years, we fostered more than 19 dogs. Different ages, different histories, different fears and quirks and strengths. Some had never lived inside. Some had never been asked for anything. Each one arrived as a fresh puzzle.

Fostering is a crash course you can’t get any other way. You don’t get to theorize — you have to help a real dog get comfortable, this week, in your actual home. And because we did it again and again, we started to see the patterns underneath. What actually built trust. What settled a nervous dog. Which small, consistent habits made the biggest difference. The repetition wasn’t a burden — it was the education. Nineteen-plus times through, you stop guessing and start knowing what tends to work.

But we never forgot how hard it was at the very beginning, when we had none of that experience and no reliable map.

What we decided to build

That’s the whole reason Cascadian Paws exists. We wanted to take what we learned the slow, hands-on way and rebuild it on a foundation we could actually stand behind — checked against trusted, peer-reviewed, and professional sources rather than whoever posted loudest. Guidance that’s science-aligned, genuinely accurate, and, just as important, easy to find and affordable to own. No one should have to spend their first year with a dog doing detective work just to get a straight answer.
